Amburana
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPECIES

>Geographical distribution: Found in Humid Tropical Forest (bh-T) areas in the Pachitea river basin, Huánuco department, in Perú, growing mostly on sandy clayish, deep and well drained soils. A member of the high forest vegetation group, it grows in association with Virola spp., Manikara spp., Crudia spp., Guateria spp.

>The tree: Straight cylinder - shape trunk with base fins up to 0,30 me height. Grows 40 m tall and develops chest high diameter of 1,65. Rounded broad canopy and 20 mm thick dark brownish grey bark shed in short stripes.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WOOD

>Color: Freshly cut trunk alburnum is yellow and duramen is reddish yellow, Gradual transition between layers. Open air dried alburnum turns yellow HUE 8/6 10YR and duramen turns reddish yellow 7/6 7,5YR (Munsell Soil Color Charts).

Fragrance:

Typically pleasant, similar to vanilla

TECHNICAL ADVICE

>Ishpingo dries well with intermediate linear shrinkage and stable volumetric contraction. Average mechanical attributes values excepting for low resistance shearing and firmness.
Easy to work using power or hand tools. Despite good workability, interwoven grain accounts for certain irregularities after planning. Good finish after sanding or raking.
Low shrinkage and T/R ratio pointing to good drying properties.
Open air drying causes small fissures on ends of wood cuts. Good resistance to fungi and insect attacks when green. Susceptible to insect attacks when dry. Intermediate preservative absorption properties.

USES

>Streaks and physical-mechanical properties make it appropriate for decorative laminates and wherever fine appearance and stable dimensión wood is required. Also used in furniture making, carpentry and woodworking.
